Over the Dead Line S M Dufur 9781115618144 Books
Written several decades after the Civil War, this book is based on a war-time journal which the author kept while soldiering with a Vermont cavalry regiment. (He appears to be from the vicinity of Richford, Vt.). The focus is primarily on his experiences as a POW in Libby and other Confederate prisons. It's not always clear how much the author is relying on memory to fill in the details of these horrific 11 months in his distant past versus drawing directly from the diary, but we are given, nevertheless, a vivid, first-person account of day-to-day life in the POW camps - the desperate conditions, the degradation and disease, the alliances and enmities which arise in a true-life Lord of the Flies-type scenario. Also described is a period of several day's escape, during which the author and his friend are assisted by sympathetic slaves. The style is lucid and engaging, lacking the stilted formality which characterizes some narratives from the period. A useful read for Civil War buffs and an absorbing story for any reader. Includes references by name to a handful of Dufur's Vermonter comrades, most of whom perished in the prisons before the war's end could free them.Quirky closing chapter is hard to figure, but doesn't detract from the body of the text.
